English Yacs handbook Authoring

How to create and share a Freemind map?

Edit files at your workstation, then upload them to your server. Yacs will do the rest.

[title]Develop Freemind maps[/title] If you don't have it yet, you should install the very last release of Freemind on your workstation. This is a very clever piece of Java code available on a number of platforms, including Unix, Windows and Mac.

Freemind can be downloaded and used for free, providing you are respecting the GNU GPL.

Launch the copy of Freemind that has been installed at your workstation, and hit the File menu to create a new map.

There are tons of useful keyboard shortcuts and powerful mouse actions that are described in the provided documentation (which is a mind map, of course).

Some tips:

- Change the label at the center of the screen to describe the topic of the map.

- Hit the Insert key to create and expand branches and sub-branches.

- Hit the Enter key to create nibbles of the current node.

- Hit Ctrl-K to add a web link to the current node.

- At some point, save your work from the File menu.

[title]Upload a map to your YACS server[/title]

Connect your browser to the target server, and browse a page that you are allowed to work on. Click on the link to 'Upload a file' and, on the following form, hit the button that will allow you to select one file from your workstation. Select the freemind you have just prepared. Then hit the Submit button to start the upload. Done!

The new file appears at the bottom of the updated page, with other files if any. Note that it displays a nice Freemind icon, because YACS recognizes automatically the .mm file extension.

Click on the icon or on the link to zoom on the file. As per following image, Yacs offers either to browse the file interactively, or to download a copy of the file.

Yacs embeds two Freemind browsers, one based on Flash, and a secondary one using Java run-time. This means that the map can be browsed even if one of the run-time libraries is missing.

Maybe you would like to check this by yourself, and click on the Freemind icon below to start a brand new experience in mind mapping.
