What does the "Family" box in the create section dialog do

Bernard, how can I use the "family" option in the create a new section dialog. I.e. what is it used for?

Also what code, templatees, css etc, do I change to remove the "bookmarklet" and "news feeder" boxes as these will not apply to my site at all and I don't need them to appear anywhere at this time
